Artificial blood test succeeds
Our Boston Bureau
31 DEC
The first artificial blood transfusion trials on humans conducted at the Tufts University near Boston have shown spectacular results. This is a giant leap in the medical field as the blood shortages will no longer plague the hospitals.

What this blood substitute provides is a useful bridge delivering oxygen to the human's body while giving it time for its own marrow to produce more red blood cells of its own. It has a limited half life before the body gets rid of it. A product like this is useful for emergency situations and treating conditions like anaemia. This will eliminate the need to match blood types and ensure that donated blood is free of harmful viruses such as HIV.

The company Biopure that manufactures it is awaiting approval to market it in Europe and a result is expected in about a year's time.
