Europe's ever changing shape Our Brussels Bureau 31 DEC The European Union which took it's bold first step on January 4, 1999 with the introduction of the Euro by 11 member countries has now come a long way. The joining of Romania, Ukraine & Yugoslavia to the fold of the EU has brought the dream of achieving a United Europe, one step closer to reality. The European Union has been doing well after it's creation. The Euro has cemented it's place in the global markets as the strongest currency after the dollar. The European Union has also been managing Europe's administration well. The group of countries supported by a strong ECB have moved in small steps to achieve the required results. But these small steps have succeeded in keeping the momentum of the European Union going. Despite some heavy weather in 2006 when Italy faced the possibility of a recession, the European Union has not seen any major hiccups in it's growth. The EU has however manged to strengthen it's administration base and fine tune it's policies to ensure that they are ready to face any imminent danger now. Even now, Europe is not a single united state but more like a loose confederation of states, who in partnership with the US still continues to be the central geo-political axis of global power. |
