Mega Cities Our Hong Kong Bureau 31 DEC Bombay records a population of over 20mn inhabitants today, a growth of over 50% over the last ten years. This phenomenon of "mega cities" is straining the capacity of local & national governments to provide even the most basic services to urban residents. An estimated 25 to 50% of urban inhabitants in developing countries live in impoverished slums & squatter settlements with little or no access to adequate water sanitation or refuse collection. In such situations both environmental quality & human health & well being are at risk. The worlds urban population is currently growing at four times the rate of the rural population Urbanisation is rampant in the fast growing economies of the Asia-Pacific regions. At this rate of growth sociologists expect almost two thirds of the world population to be living in towns & cities by 2025. |
