Russians pour into the streets !
Our Russia Bureau
31 DEC

Chaos in Rusia has taken another turn with protestors taking to the streets in all the major cities. The harshness of last years winter coupled with several counts of misgovernance on the part of the Russian government have brought things to a head. President Dimitri has been proved to be weak and lacking the political consensus required for continuing economic reforms. The government has run short of money and has not paid pensions & military salaries for months.

Food shortages which have swept through many russian cities have necessitated an embarrassing appeal to the US for food shipments. Anger at the continued political stalemate, widespread corruption and worsening living conditions has led to these protests. Ultra nationalist leader Slovenky has asked for the government to step down and for new elections to be held. There is also a danger that the military heads may carry out a coup if salaries are not paid within the next few months.

The whole experiment of Democracy in Russia is now at stake!
